Scheduling question - sorry!

NBU 7.0 and 7.01 on Windows

Probably an elementary question to the majority of you, however I have the following scheduling requirement:

1. Weekly backup start Sat 01:00hrs, end Sun 23:00hrs, exclude the last Saturday of every month

2. Monthly backup start Sat 01:00hrs, end Sun 23:00hrs which replaces the excluded weekly backup on the last Saturday of every month

Using the calendar option seems the most intuitive to me, though I'm having issues excluding the last Saturday. Probably very obvious but I'm missing it at the moment.

Any ideas?

Thanks

  • We did have to do this on several of our policies & it is a PAIN! (& you have to remember to go back & do it again .... & again.....)

I did eventually manage to tighten the backup window etc such that the weekly backups couldn't run which removed this need.

  • have the weekly running every Saturday via frequency & then get the monthly to run on last Saturday via calendar (in the SAME POLICY) then as long as your backup window is the same (start time) you should find that the monthly will take precedence when  it is time for that to run - we have been using this format for years with no issues & without the need to exclude specific dates.

  • Cheers Andy.

If the monthly takes precendence over the weekly backups, does this mean the weekly could potentially run after the monthly has completed?

  • I was tempted to put something in my earlier post!

It would possibly depend upon how quick the monthly finishes - there is the potential for the weekly to start after the monthly finishes if the backup window is still open at that point.

    ***EDIT***

I notice your backup window is nearly 48hours - does that mean that your backup(s) could be starting at any point during that period? Have you a lot of jobs/streams that maybe queue up waiting for resources?

  • Hello,

If you have enough resources to run 2 backups at a time and you want both Weekly and Monthly on last saturday then use multiple copies in Monthly Schedule with 1st copy at Monthly retention and 2nd at Weekly retention. (Keep the Weekly schedule in the same policy as before)

If there are no much tape drives available they you can duplicate the Monthly backups after they complete. You can change retention for the 2nd copy (duplicated copy)

These two ways reduces network load on the client as data is transfered only once.

let me know if there are any concerns.

  • Thanks guys,

Andy, as you described the backups could start at any time during the backup window. I noticed the weekly backups were also completing within the backup window, which is what prompted me to ask the question.

Praveen, I want the monthly backup to replace the weekly backup on the last Saturday of every month.

    Thanks again.

  • In the screenshot shown It was Friday selected, you select in same way for Saturday in Weekly Schedule. And Select that Last Saturday leaving 1st - fourth Saturdays in monthly schedule.

  • that sometimes there are only 4 Saturdays in a month - so you still end up with a weekly & monthly on the same day.

If this really is an issue for the OP then excluding the last Saturday of the month manually for the weekly backups will be the only option.

  • .........there's 5 Saturdays in July!

Andy, is there an easy way to exclude the last Saturday of the month for the weekly backups other than going through the exclude tab and manually selecting the date?

    Thanks

  • Disappointed you can't do this but satisfied it's not a straightforward answer - I don't feel too much of a nugget for asking.

Thanks for your help, apppreciate it.
