Server Restore looking to confirm my plan.

Hi Guys,

We have a W2K8r2 server that is running on a failing local disc array so were looking to replacing both local discs then restoring from NBU rather than rebuilding the server.

My plan is to run a full backup of the server.

Shut it down and replace the internal HDD’s.

Start it up and install vanilla W2K8r2 and an NBU client

Restore the server from backup.

Questions:

When I do the vanilla install should I give it the same name/IP as the server I’m restoring?

How can I check that the full backup is capturing all the local drives and the system state? (current selection is ‘ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES’).

Are there any tips for young players that you could pass on?

  • You want to know this guide if you go down the server re-install path.

HOWTO: Use NetBackup to perform a restore for a total and complete recovery of Windows XP, 2000, 2003, or 2008 client(s) that includes C: (and other system) drive(s), Shadow Copy Component, and/or System_State from a reliable full Windows-NT backup without IDR or BMR in the event of a Disaster (or need to fall back to a known working state).

Please read thru the guide more than once before staring the restore. Do not skip step unless the guide instruct you to do so.

  • system state isn't exempted from ALl_LOCAL_DRIVES (ideally shouldn't be) not sure if explicitely is.

Keeping same hostname and IP is must, however it can be changed in cases (where merger or split of domain is there or different requirement from business etc. This requires Symantec PS to be involved (additional charges for this)

It's better to follow above only. Just keep Your catalog backup handy for true disaster recovery of your NBU else you'll end up importing all the images from disk as well as from tape media

    Hope this helps
