SQL Inplace restore

Is it possible to restore SQL database to its original location?  when i try to restore it says that "access could not be obtained because the databse is in use",  DO i have to take the database offline
7.1.x and Earlier
Backup and Recovery
NetBackup

    i figured it out: There were user logged in and using the database, after i logged them off, i was able to restore the database.

    I believe the database needs to be offline in order for you to restore it.
