status 196

Hi friends.

Thanks for your support.

We have 2 Dell Tape Drive with same policy types.

On one the tape drive, I am getting a error message

Status 196: client backup was not attempted because backup window closed

But the same policy is working properly on another tape drive.

  • Please tell us more about your environment - are the two tape drives in the same library or in different libraries?

NBU does not write backups directly to drives - it writes to the Storage Unit that you select in the policy.
The STU then maps to robot number that contains a certain amount of drives.

If two drives are in the same robot, you will have 1 STU with 2 drives in the properties. Here you cannot select which drive to use for backups. NBU will automatically load balance between them.

If you have 2 libraries, you will have 2 STU's that you can select in policies.

If you do not enable multiplexing in STU properties and in Policy schedules, NBU can only write one backup at a time and the rest of the jobs will have to queue. If queued jobs did not get a chance to go active by the time that the schedule window closes, you will see status 196.

PS: I suggest you book yourself on a NetBackup training course and also start reading manuals. Admin Guide I is a good starting point.

You can find links to all manuals in Handy Links in my signature.

  • look in the job details to see which resource the job is waiting for & then go from there.
