Storage lifecycle policies - duplication source and target query

Hi All,

I'm currently using a storage lifecycle policy as follows:

Backup to Primary Site NBU Appliance 1

     Duplication to Primary Site NBU Appliance 2

          Duplication to Primary Site tape library

When this runs it uses the previous copy of the data to duplicate to the next target e.g.
Duplication #1 reads from Primary Site NBU Appliance 1 to write to Primary Site NBU Appliance 2
Duplication # 2 reads from Primary Site NBU Appliance 2 to write to Primary Site tape library.

Is there any way to "force" duplication of duplication # 2 from the primary copy of the data i.e. Primary Site NBU Appliance 1 ?

The reason I ask this is that soon I want to implement a storage lifecycle policy which will meet the following requirements:
1) Backup to appliance in primary site (for nearline restore)
2) duplication to an appliance in our DR site
3) duplication to tape in Primary site
4) I don't want to read data back over the link to the primary site in order to duplicate to tape.
5) If possible duplication must go to offsite appliance first as this is the quickest method of protecting data off-site

Backup to Primary Site NBU Appliance 1

     Duplication to DR Site NBU Appliance 1

           Duplication to Primary Site tape library

Has anyone experience of this ?

Thanks in advance.

  • Here is print screen from admin guide, confirming the above:

  • As well as changing the indent of the stages as outlined above you can control this when you actually create the SLP

    When you create the first duplication you need to highlight the backup step and then click the Add button

    When you create the second duplication highlight the backup again and click the Add button - this will indent it correctly for you - like saying "from the one i have selected add a step"

    Hope this makes sense and helps - it should do it all in the right order for you that way

  • In the SLP dialog box, try to play with those arrows on the bottom. Select your last duplication and then right click left arrow, this should perform the copy from the first inital backup...

    So the last duplication as shown on the attached image will be moved to left hand side and will be just below the first one

  • After some testing I've discovered the following.

    Backup -> Appliance 1

    Duplication -> Appliance 2 (no indentation)

    Duplication -> Tape (no indentation).

    This will duplicate the backup to both destination from the source appliance at the same time.

    If you configure as follows:

    Backup -> Appliance 1

    Duplication -> Appliance 2 (no indentation)

        Duplication -> Tape (with indentation).

    This meets the requirement of going to offsite appliance first but unfortunately if you indent the Duplication -> tape it will only read from the second Appliance.

    There is no way to successful meet all criteria:

    1) Secondary copy to DR appliance 2 (first duplication)

    2) Once first duplication to second appliance complete then duplicate to tape.

    As it stands I have no choice but to set it to duplicate to both destinations at the same time otherwise it will read from DR applicance over link to primary site tape library.

    Maybe this will be possible in 7.6 as it certainly doesn't appear to be in 7.1
