TMG Backup Procedure

Hi Mates,

I am new to use Symantec Nebackup 7.5 product. I made some policies of taking backup of vmware virtual machines. All backup of VM's running perfectly except from the TMG running application. Is something wrong i do to take the backup of TMG or i must allow some ports on TMG to take the backup. Both NB server and TMG server are accessible to each others.

The error i got is VSS service, but when i looking of it, it's running perfectly. Any help related to TMG backup taken would be very helpful for me.

Regards,

Mohsin

  • is VM using BUS sharing? as it is not supported for snapshots... and NBU relies on snapshots for VM backups..

for such VMs ... NBU agent must be installed in it and be protected... like a physical host...:-)

Check below ... similar to yours

  • Hi Moshin,

Please post the error and also configuration of the system and the version of operating system you're running inside the guest where TMG is installed. Error 156 can be attributed to many things both internal and external to the VM.

Lets first see if there is something different in the configuration of this VM. The others are working so the issue would be that there is something different with this one, you need find out what.

If you've enabled logging on the backup host you can post the bpfis logs as well. If not, create the bpfis log folder under INSTALL_PATH\NetBackup\Logs and then rerun the vm backup for that guest and capture the log.

  • I have been wondering what exactly 'TMG' is....

Google found a Microsoft product called Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG).

Is this what is running on this VM?

How are you backing up the VMs?
With NBU Client installed in each VM and MS-Windows policy?
Or with VMware policy with no NBU software installed in the VMs?

Please also show us what you see:

The error i got is VSS service, but when i looking of it, it's running perfectly.

Show us the error that you are seeing?
And also the 'running perfectly' part.

    Thanks.

  • I don't think the application matters..

Usually a VMware backup error is access/permission-related. What error code did you get?

First, check bpbkar logs on your VM backup host to find out. Note that the following ports are required for different scenario:

  • Kindly check if u are able to create snapshot in backup after disabling quiescing of the machine(policy vmware tab> advanced > virtual machine quiesce = disabled). also check if you are able to make snapshot from Vcenter.

if this is working then problem could be application is not able to quiesced or problem with vss writers.

check the state of the writers on this client with vss admin list writers commnd.

  • One of the recommended methods of backing up Forefront TMG is to use VSS to take snapshots.  Check with windows admins to see what they setup and when it runs (they may conflict). Try running vssadmin list providers & vssadmin list writers etc

  • Hi Moshin,

This is not the bpfis log its the job details. PLease get the bpfis log from the backup host as explained earlier.

  • Try to take snapshot of this machine from Vcenter console and also check the state of VSS writers in Guest OS by command "Vss admin list writers".

also check event logs of guest machine, if there are any VSS related message.

ALso try taking backup by disabling quiescing of the machine from backup policy.

vmware tab> advanced > virtual machine quiesce = disabled

  • is VM using BUS sharing? as it is not supported for snapshots... and NBU relies on snapshots for VM backups..

for such VMs ... NBU agent must be installed in it and be protected... like a physical host...:-)
