Transition from NetBackup TL to EMC DataDomain

Dear Experts,

We are currently having NetBackup 7.5 on a media server, with back up done on Tape Library (TL).  We are planning to remove the TL and put EMC Data Domain, and to make use of DDboost feature. Please let me know the safe and smooth way of transiting from the old to new back up. I would like to backup the data on both TL and DD for sometime before removing the TL. Please let me know the best practices followed.

I came to know that 7.5 has to be upgraded to 7.6 to support DD VTL. Please let me know if there are any other key points to be taken care.

-Regards

  • NBU 7.6 is not required. NBU 7.x is perfectly supported and works well

To  implement Data Domain boost follow this guide:

    https://japan.emc.com/collateral/software/white-papers/h7296-data-domain-boost-openstorage-wp.pdf

Running a SLP the media server will recive the data and process data via the BOOST plugin and store the de-duplicated data on the Data Domain. Then the media server will copy the data from the data domain to tape in full size.

I don't think you need to be scared of data domain - we have 5 running and has not lost data on that account.

But I do understand you want to be "safe and not sorry" laugh

  • Start with less important policies and the move on until DD has taken over the load.

If you want to save data on both Data Domain and tape configure a SLP with Data Domain the primary location and then a duplication job to tape.

    Can you clarify ?

When using a VTL Netbackup has no idea what hardware is below the virtual layer. I think even NBU 6.5 supported DD VTL. Can you provide a link to the information about 7.6 and DD VTL ?

  • Hi Nicolai,

Thanks for the quick response. I came to know that for implementing DDBoost 7.6 would be required. Is it?

If I'm going to have a SLP with Primary backup on DD and duplication to tape, hope the data copied on tape is not dependent on the data backedup on DD.

So I assume that the NetBackup mediaserver will receive the data and send 2 copies as explained above. If it is correct how DDBoost can be implemented.

  • Hi Nicolai,

    Thanks for the response.

Do we need to get the license for "Symantec NetBackup data Protection Optimization Option"?

Any extra lincense would be required for adding Data Domain?

If you have Sales contact of NetBackup please send it.

  • Advanced Disk license was traditionally all you needed for OST.

If you want to use Advanced functions such a AIR and Accelerator, you need Data Protection Optimization license.

If you have Capacity License for NBU 7.6, this option is now included in your license.

Best to discuss your license requirements with your reseller.
