Understanding NetBackup Port Requirements

Good Afternoon-

I am trying to better understand the network port requirements for NetBackup 7.5/7.6.

In my environment, a firewall exists between the master server and each of my media servers.

After reading the guides, I am led to believe that the only ports needing to be opened between the master and media servers are:

TCP/1556
TCP/2821
TCP/13724
TCP/13782
TCP/13720
TCP/13783

And indeed, communication between my master and media server appears to be working OK.

What stumps me, however, is all of the firewall/connection options avaliable from the GUI...

For example, in the Media Server properties, there is a page for configuring "Port Ranges"... "These properties apply to selected master servers, media servers, indexing servers, and clients", but doesn't say anything about the ports listed above!

So what are the proper ports needing to be opened between the master and media servers?

Thanks!

  • 1556 will do it if you don't use NBAC.

A lot of the setting you see is for back level comparability.

It is worth mentioning that 1556 is a PBX (switch) port where Symantec can tunnel multiple ports thru. So even if Symantec decide to use 13720 in the furture it will still be tunneled thru 1556 and therefore not show as a port to open in the firewall.

    Hope this explain.

  • have a look into below tech note, it will give you detail idea about the port requirements for different purpose.

  • Most definately no need for all of those ports....

As per above excellent posts and TECH136090, as from NBU 7.0.1, only port 1556 needs to be opened in both directions.

If you have dedupe in your environment, you need a couple more ports:

  • We were unable to get NBU to work until we had 13724 opened as well 1556. For MSDP to PDDO you need 443, 10082, and 10102.
