vCenter is not usually in the backup data path. The backup data path is directly from the ESX host to the VM backup server/NBU media server. The traffic is via the admin vmkernel port (formerly known as the service console), the speed of this port is a critical factor in determining ndb backup throughput, I has seen this set at speed designed for administration which is not very useful for backups.
The scenarios assume that all the VMware storage is all block-based (disk array LUNs) but file-based (NAS) storage is also used for VMware datastores this will limit your technology choices.
