Vault picking lists

Please can someone help with this?

Hello again

Netbackup Enterpise 7.0
Windows 2003 Server

Currently we are using Vault to automatically duplicate images from VTL to physical tape.  This was originally put in place by a contractor.

I've looked at the Vault admin guide but I’m still not understanding this.

My first question is:

How does Vault establish what tapes are due for coming back onsite?

And

Would it be possible to use SLP to duplicate images to tape but use vault to automatically eject them, and possibly generate reports for the ones that need to come back onsite?

Thanks

  • Bill is correct re. the time vault will request tapes back.

Re,. the SLP, yes you could do this - and then set the vault profile to skip the duplication and only eject (and hopefully run the catalog backup also).

However, unless you have a reason to do it this way, I would just leave Vault to do the dups also.  My reason being, introducing SLPs is another layer of complexity that 'may' not be required.

Troublshooting, maintaing and running a system is easier the less complex the system/ environment is.

based on the expiration date of the duplicate images

Would it be possible to use SLP ... ?
sorry, not too familiar with that product

  • Thanks wrobbins

I'm still unsure about this one and it's bugging me :(. Sorry
If I run the picking list report for media coming onsite (say for the previous vault profile), where is it looking to find out what tapes are required to come back onsite?  If it's looking at the expiration dates of previously duplicated images, how far back is it looking?

    Thanks again
  • Thanks Bill

I get what you're saying re adding another layer of complexity.

We need vault to run as soon our daily Incremental backup jobs finish.  I thought this may be easier with SLP due to the fact that the duplication phase could start as soon as the backup job finishes, and would be all handled in one policy.

  • Hi

Yes of course, I know.  I was just saying that it may be easier with SLP to achieve what I'm after.  The backup and duplication job can be scheduled in the same policy so there would be no need to have a separate vault policy with a separate schedule just to handle duplication.

    Thanks though.
