Vault Priority -

Hey folks, is there a way to set vault so that it has less of a priority than backups? When my vault job kicks off it is set to 2 read and 2 write, this only leaves me with 4 drives to get my backups done in my window. I would like backups to take a higher priority than the vault. Vault can run all day when noting else is going on or resume when the nightly backups are done. Is this possible?

Thanks.

  • I do not know the priority of vault but you can increase the priority of the backups on the policy attribute tab. Also have you considered using inline copy?
  • I do not know to much about the inline tape function. Seems like that is going to chew a resource during the backup window as well. I really just want my vault to run durnign non-backup window hours to a different pool.

    Thanks.
  • The only way to  set priority would be to set the normal back up jobs at a higher level than the vaul policy.

If your vault jobs can run during the day you could set your Vault jobs for duplication.  This way only 1 copy of the backup job is created during the nightly backups (ie less back up time during your regular window).  And your vault jobs will not have to run during the same time.  The down side to this is it chews up a few more tapes, but the scheduling flexiblity has always been a plus.  Also, duplicate vault jobs are from tape to tape, thus less time hitting the clients.

    Just a thought...
  • Zak,
As Omar has said why not have your Vault policies start when your regular backups finish? And set your Vault policies to have a low priority, but this will only help if you have two policies trying to start at the same time.

Personally, I'd just set up the backup windows for the Vault policies so that they don't start when anything else is running. Alternatively, you could create a script that uses the bpdbjobs -summary command to check for any active jobs, and if there aren't any active jobs then start the vault policies or vault profiles directly. If there are active jobs then the script just waits until there are no active jobs.

  • Hey guys, I do start my vault when backups are not running, the trouble is that vault runs for a week and sucks up 4 drives for that week. If I set the backup jobs to a higher priority will vault yeild to a backup during the backup window and resume when no backups are running?

    Thanks.
  • Hello,
No the vault job cannot stop in between for a backup job and continue later. Policy Priority comes into picture only if two jobs are about to start at the same time. Then the higher priority Job will run first. But a job should complete and cannot stop automatically in between.

    Thanks

  • Zak,
Why does your Vault take a whole week to run? What actual activity is it performing?

I'd say that you need to review / change this if it's interfering with your daily backups.
