Veritas netbackup licensing in virtual environment

Hi,

Need link / document explaing the Veritas Netbackup licensing requirement details in virtualized environment. Wherein one physical server is runing 7-8 virtual servers of different OS and some virtual server is having same Oracle database on linux and windows and some are having SQL database on windows.

Physical servers are connected to SAN as all OS images are hosted on SAN. For some VMs SAN base backup is required  but for some VMs LAN backup is okey.

Pls provide the licensing document which will provide answers to licensing senarios in virtual environments like mentioned above.

Regards..

  • This has been greatly simplified now (though still confuses everyone!)

You need one Enterprise Client License per ESX server (no matter how many O/S and how many different O/S are on it)

You need one Database and Application pack per ESX Server (even if you have 2 SQL Servers, 1 Exchange Server and 3 Oracles Servers on that ESX Server)

Seems odd to me that Symantec have done this as it seems a real give away now but that is what i have been told is the current position.

The actual licensing guide is held by Symantec Partners and I do not believe it is for Public Release so i cannot provide you with that, but your Symantec Partner should be able to confirm everything with you including getting the Tiering right according to your environment.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Mark,

Thanks.... Your understanding is correct....I also got the same info from the internet. There is Tier based licensing depending upon the the Processors the physical server has.

Also With netbackup-7 they have one more licensing mode -- depending upon the size of data....!!!

Seems licensing is becoming very easy....

  • Great - glad to have helped - dont forget to mark a solution if you feel you can to close the thread and help others in the future searching for similar information
