Vmware Backup Query

Started reading the Netbackup for VMware 7.5 Manual.

Difference between discovery host  and backup host in Netbackup for Vmware ?

Discovery host name will give in client tab, but we need NB client in Backup host.

Pleae help with easy illustration

  • discovery host: - is the one which is used to identify the VM when backup triggrs.. VM details like VM location, ESXi name, data storage name etc

and this discovery work based on the query that defined on the clients tab..

backup host:- is the one which communicates to Vcenter and get request for snapshot of the VM that was discovered

so i would perfer to keep both backup host and Discovery hosts are same.

  • You may want to read through this section in NetBackup 7.5.0.x for VMware Administrator's Guide http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5605 :

Media servers as backup or discovery hosts

It seems that the discovery host is only used when the Query builder runs. You specify in the policy when this discovery should run. This discovery will simply populate the Client list in the policy, and not be part of the backup process.

If you go through the next section:

Overview of the VMware backup process

You will see that only the master server and backup host is part of the backup process.

  • Thanks Mariane for your valuable inputs.

    Hi ChAmp35

We need to install netbackup client in the discovery host.

With the help of discovery host ( if it is a different server), the backup host comes to know the list of virtual machines to be backup. As marianne mentioned, the query builder is the main activity of discovery host. When the schedule comes the netbackup request discovery host to provide the list of virtual machine to  be backup by query the Vcenter .

Backup process is always between backup host and master server where discovery host will not have any role to play in backup process.

Marianne please correct me if i am wrong.

  • DO we required client agent on discovery host also, if backup host is diffrent than discovery host.

  • Correct.

In all honesty, I have only ever seen users having the Backup host(s) as discovery host(s).

Not sure why anyone would want to separate these functions...
