VMware backup V/S FS backup

Like in File system backup we can select "Follow NFS and Cross mount points" to protect Network file system backup.

Will VMware backup captures these options "Follow NFS and Cross mount points"?

Why i am asking this question because i can see there is a huge difference in KB and files backed up in both policies

VMware policy(Full backup) for same client captures 50352269 KB but FS policy(Full Backup) for same client captures 2114751968 KB.

and "no. of file capture" is also double in FS policy(Full backup).

  • Hi Dav1234

The VMware policy will only backup the VMDK files associated with the VM (and not excluded). It has no way to backup any network mounted file system that the VM may use (the option for follow NFS in a VMware policy is greyed out - so not sure what you expected).

    David.

  • Do not use a file system policy to backup VMDK files, the backup will be worthless as the VM's will not be in a consistent state.

Please use a VMware policy to backup VMware VM's.
