See Appendix D of NBU for VMware Admin Guide :
The SYMCquiesce utility allows NetBackup to quiesce the Linux file system.Without this utility, NetBackup cannot guarantee that all required data has beenflushed to disk when the snapshot occurs. Any data that has not been flushed todisk (still in memory) is not included in a snapshot. In that case, the data that iscaptured in the snapshot is incomplete. The SYMCquiesce utility quiesces the Linux file system, to guarantee that all datahas been flushed from memory to disk. Quiescing the file system allows anypending data changes to finish before the snapshot occurs. The data in thesnapshot is complete.....
Requirements for the SYMCquiesce utilityNote the following requirements:■ The SYMCquiesce utility supports the following Linux operating systems:■ Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5.4 and later.■ SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Update 2 and later.

HI Mariannie,
I dont know much abt Cent OS.
DO i need to install SYMCquiesce utility for Cent OS version?
cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 5 (Final) - Anonymous
If you are refering to the part of your backup solution that performs the backup of the snapshotted VM off your VMware datastores..
Can Centos OS perform this role for NetBackup? No.
You require a
Windows Server OS
OR
as of 7.5.0.2
SUSE Linux 11 Server

We need more information of what exactly you need to do - is CentOS a VM guest that you need to backup up? Or do you want to use it as backup host?
If VM guest that you need to back up, please refer to extract from the manual that I have posted above.
You will see that SYMCquiesce is only supported on Redhat and SUSE.
Because of the binary compatibility with Redhat, you could try to install SYMCquiesce. No guarantees that it will work...Without SYMCquiesce, you run the risk of inconsistent backup. You will have to choose between VM-type backup and installation of NBU Client in the guest.

Cent OS is the Guest OS in VM that need to be backed up..
We have thow VMS running as DNS with Cent OS...
Off- Host BAckup's were working fine for long time but now one of the VM failing with error 156.
WRN - ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES is not frozen, with Status code 156
I just wanted to know whether VM-ware Off host backup's are supported with cent OS or Not.
So as i understand i need to install a client to take the backup which is recommended from Symantec...

Where should i check the compatibility of VMware offhost backup's with Guest OS
- AnonymousNetBackup for VMware supports virtual machine backup and recovery on all guestoperating systems supported by VMware. To checkVMwaresupport for a particularoperating system, consult the VMware Compatibility Guide:
I recommend you consult this doc now to know where the official statement this taken from:
DOCUMENTATION: Support for NetBackup 7.x in virtual environments (updated September 17, 2012).
As it says though there are differences in OS for file-level recovery. Might only be able to perform block level recovery - ie the whole VM or increments of VM backup.

This can be answered in this screen grab from document I referenced above.
