volume group

what are the default volume groups created when NBU master server is installed?

    The first three numbers show 'how many' different types of tape drives are in the robot.

    If I have LTO. LTO4, LTO5 drives in the robot, the volume groups will be starting

    000, 001, 002

    If I add another type of tape drive, say DLT, I get another volumr group stating 003 

    It does not matter WHAT the drives are, just that they are different types.

    So. the 3 digits show only how many differenet types of drives there are.

    SO,

    If I remove all the DLT drives, VG starting 003 will be deleted (as media is also removed).

    If I now add in LTO2 drives, the volume group starting 003 will be created again.

    So the VG number is NOT mapped to a drive type.

    003 is used because it is the next unused number.  It does not matter what the drive types are, just that they are different drive types.

    I think there won't be any default Volume Groups created with the installation of NBU. Once you complete configuring storage devices with NBU, then volume groups will be created, depends upon the number of robots and type of media you have.

    Example: An autoloader with one robot, n number of LTO 5Cartridges (HCART2) and a cleaning cartridge (DLT_CLN) configured with NBU. Two volume groups will be created one for Data cartridges and another for cleaning cartridges.

    Volumes groups are bit strange ...

    A volume group shows the location.

    Example.

    The robot has LTO4 tape drives, 

    If I have 1 robot, say TLD type and I have no media - I have no volume group.

    If I then put some tapes in the library and run an inventory the tapes will go into volume group

    000_00000_TLD

    If I then add another library, the same as the first the media in that library will be in volume group

    000_00001_TLD

    If I then add some LTO5 drives to the first library and some LTO5 tapes, these will go into volume group

    001_00000_TLD

    So the volume group is 

    xxx_yyyyy_<robot type>

    The type is easy - the type of the robot

    yyyyy -  this is the robot number

    The xxx is a bit harder.

    The number xxx increases by 1 every time a different density of drive is added to the robot.  It is not possible to tell which density/ type of drive, just the number of different drives added.

    So,

    If my robot contains drives LT01 and LTO2 the volume groups will start 000 and 001

    If the robot contains LTO4 and LTO5 the volume groups will still be 000 and 001

    So you see, the first 3 digits just show the number of instances of different drives.

    Martin really has the patience of a saint!! Volume group '---' simply means 'non-robotic'. Volume Group is explained in NetBackup Administrator's Guide for UNIX and Linux, Volume II http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3651 - with examples.

    I just came back to the post to add what --- means - I forgot that one last night ...

    Marianne beat me to it ...

    As explained, it is non-robotic, so in a bit more detail this means via an example.

    If my media is in robot 0 - it will be in volume group 000_00000_TLD for example.

    If I eject this media from the robot, it will be moved to voume group ---

    Volume group --- is ONLY created when media is ejected, so it is not created by default.

    If you put that media (in volume group ---) back into the library and run an inventory, it will move back into volume group 000_00000_TLD and if no media is left in --- the --- group will be deeted.

    So in theory, you will not have a volume group, if there is nothing in it, they will be removed.

    oh what an explanation.Hats of Martin.

    But in my environment i also have a vol  grop called offsite.alomg with 000_00000_TLD and ---.

    With what this has generated?

    Does "alomg" mean something specific to you? A location that you store tapes offsite somewhere?
