Volume in Disk Pool

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone could enlighten me... How does netbackup choose what volume to use in an AdvancedDisk disk pool?

Thanks!

  • Hi, please refer to these documents:

    Best practice for configuring AdvancedDisk:
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH158427

NetBackup 7.5 AdvancedDisk Storage Solutions Guide:
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC5149

Choosing which volume to use during a backup is determined by a few factors/options/variables:
Intelligent Capacity Management (Pre-allocated space and Potential  free space)
    High/Low watermark
    Limit I/O Stream
    Limit I/O Stream per volume

The best practice document has more on the Intelligent Capacity Management topic, and the guide has more on the rest.

    Hope that helped.

  • Only statement I can find is as below, but is not clear how NetBackup select volumes based on capacity and size.

NetBackup 7.5 AdvancedDisk Storage Solutions Guide, page 28:

When NetBackup sends backup data to a disk pool, NetBackup selects disk volumes
based on available capacity and predicted size of the backup. NetBackup tries to
write backup data to a single volume. If necessary, backup images span disk
volumes in a disk pool. Backup images do not span across multiple disk pools.

  • Thanks very much for the info!!

If I have have a number of LUNs of ~2TB presented to the media server running Sol 10, is it better to combine LUN's to create bigger volumes rather than leaving them as independent volumes?

So if i leave them independent of each other I will have many relatively small volumes. So will performance be improved in this manner but the volumes could fill up quite quick. Will there be performance loss combining some LUNs together into a ZFS file sys?
