Replicating Operating System Volume

Is it possible to replicate the Operating System (windows 200x) Volume using VVR? I have a feeling it's not possible but can someone confirm this?

  • The answer is NO
My reference is this VERITAS technote

Will VERITAS Replication Exec (tm) successfully replicate the Windows OS to provide Disaster Recovery?

    http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/276393.htm

    Here are the details:
Replication Exec will not provide effective OS disaster recovery. There are files which are difficult to replicate and so are skipped by Replication Exec. These include certain files contained in the :\WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory and below (including the Windows Registry, etc.).
Although Replication Exec will appear to complete the replication, a number of key files will have been skipped, leaving the replicated drive incapable of booting.
The following is a list of files/directories that Replication Exec will not replicate:
    Path: C:\WINNT\System32\config
    Qualifier: *.*
    Path: C:
    Qualifier: pagefile.sys
    Path: ?:\System Volume Information
    Qualifier: *.*
    Path: ?:\$Extend
    Qualifier: *.*
    Path: ?:
    Qualifier: hiberfil.sys

Here is another technote that is related to this topic
Will VERITAS Storage Replicator (tm) successfully replicate the Windows OS to provide Disaster Recovery?
    http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/243102.htm

Current versions of Storage Replicator will not provide effective OS disaster recovery. There are files which are problematic to replicate and so are skipped by Storage Replicator. These include certain files contained in the :\WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory and below (including the Windows Registry etc.).
Although Storage Replicator will appear to complete the replication, a number of key files will have been skipped, leaving the replicated drive incapable of booting.

The following is a list of files which will not replicate:

    Version 2.1 and 3.0
    Path: C:\VSR\Journals\inbound Qualifier: *.*
    Path: C:\VSR\Journals\outbound Qualifier: *.*
    Path: C:\WinNT\System32\config Qualifier: *.*
    Path: C:\VSR\Databases Qualifier: *.*
    Path: C:\VSR\Databases\Unprotected Qualifier: *.*
    Path: C: Qualifier: pagefile.sys
Path: ?:\System Volume Information Qualifier: *.*

The following are in addition to the above exclusions for version 3.0:
    Path: C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Storage Replicator\Database Qualifier: *.*
    Path: C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Storage Replicator\Logs Qualifier: *.*
    Path: ?:\$Extend Qualifier: *.*
Path: ?: Qualifier: hiberfil.sysMessage was edited by:
