I can pull rootdisk or rootmirror, and reboot. That is no issue.
Adding them back is no issue.
Also making a new rootdisk or rootmirror is easy and can be done before hand. Just pull rootdisk or rootmirror and rebuild it. Info on that is here:

Then if all goes wrong you could just pull both rootdisk, and rootmirror and replace the rootdisk with one you created before upgrade. I like that idea. Making a new rootmirror is easy stuff, and can be done quickly.
I did get a string going but am not sure if i really like the idea of the method put fourth. That is too much work after going through something not going right.
