Installing VxVM

hi,

i am a newbie to VERITAS Storage Foundation suite.

i am a  beginner trying to  learn Volume Manager. i am having troubles installing VxVM on my virtual machine (Linux).

My virtual machine is hosted on my laptop. its Red Hat Linux - 32bit OS.

i downloaded Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0 - MP3 and tried to install it.

Downloaded :

1.  Storage Foundation and HA Solutions, RHEL4/5, v5.0MP3, Part 1 of 3

2. Storage Foundation and HA Solutions, RHEL4/5, v5.0MP3, Part 2 of 3

3. Storage Foundation and HA Solutions, RHEL4/5, v5.0MP3, Part 3 of 3

when i untar the tar ball i downloaded from Trail ware page of Symantec, it included 4 directory that have the installation binaries.

i found the binaries in the directory - rhel5_i686 working for me( found it running pre-install script)

the installing start with asking me about the license key for VCS.

my questions are:

1). Can i install Storage Foundation on a Virtual Machine?

2). if yes, how can install only VxVM instead of VCS?

please provide me the instruction to install.

FYI:

Thanks in advance.

  • Lee,

    Thanks for the prompt response.

the contents of the directory rhel5_i686 had only two installable scripts (1). installer  and (2). installmp.

i ran the installer script which gives me the only option of installing VCS. it never asks me for SF.

Anyways i will try to work with MP4 release and let you know if i was able to install it.

Thanks Once again for you help.

    Krrish.

  • Storage Foundation and High Availability 5.0 - MP4 even gave me the same folders as the previous version.

the preinstallation scripts that works for my virtual machine is under the folder rhel5_i686.

this particular folder has an installation script called installer.

when i execute this script it directly asks me to provide a VCS license which i dont need.

is there any other alternative for me to install only  Veritas Volume Manage on my Virtual machine running 32-bit Rhel 5?

Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Krrish.
  • If you want to troubleshoot the installer issue, then copy and paste the output from when you run the installer script (ie: the full output from when you start to run to when you get prompted for the vcs license)

In terms of what else to try for installation:
In the same directory as the installer script, there should also be other directories
under storage_foundation/ there should be an installsf script
under volume_manager there would be an installvm script

If you need vxfs as well, use the installsf script. If you only need VxVM and no other components at all, then installvm will only install vxvm and nothing else. You will still need a valid SF/VM license to install this.

  • I think your issue here is that you are trying to install VxVM on a 32-bit OS.  I believe that VxVM 5 requires a 64-bit OS, where VCS 5 doesn't.  The reason you can't find the VxVM installer in the i686 directory is because it isn't supposed to be there.  You have two options at this point, install 64-bit VxVM 5 on a 64-bit OS or install 32-bit VxVM 4.
