VCS 5.0 or SF/HA 5.0

Hi

 

I just got the licenses' certificates for Cluster Solaris. Nowadays we are running VCS 4.0 MP2 (2 nodes, no VxVM or VxFS). We are looking for upgrading this VCS for support, but the certificates says

 

Cluster Server Solaris v5.0 License Tier 1C

 

Shouldn't they say Storage Foundation High Availability 5.0? Is SF licensed by default with this VCS 5.0 license? Suggestions?

    Hello Vincente,

     

    Cluster server is an individual product, As you have mentioned that you are not using VXVM & VXFS, there should be no need for a SF license, Cluster server license should suffice your requirement.

     

    SF license includes license for VCS,VXVM, VXFS & added features. So to clear your doubt SFHA license has VCS in it but not the otherway.

    This is my doubt: Since VCS 5.0 the storage resources are managed via SF: DiskGroup and Volumes. Our running cluster is 4.0 MP2 and using Disk resources. So if I upgrade to VCS 5.0, how will Symantec handle this product's support? I'm imagining this situation: I have a problem with the new Cluster (5.0), I submit a case to Enterprise Support and they realize the problem is a volume or disk group or something related to VxVM. They can say "you don't have support for that product". Isn't it posible?

     

    Besides I tried to install VCS with the 5.0's license and get this: it activates SF too, but appears not licensed. Correct or not? ...?

    Hi Vicente,

     

    So if I understand correctly, your current setup SF 4.0MP2 where you are NOT using VXVM & VXFS. IN other words you have Solaris Native Volume Manger working & Solaris Native UFS as filesystem. Is this correct ?

     

    Now if you just upgrade to VCS 5.0 & if you are saying that VxVM/VxFS is not even used why would Symantec worry about that ? If you have issue with VCS surely Symantec will take care & if issue is underlying on disk resources, Symantec has nothing to do with it, it should be your OS vendor who should take care here. Please correct me if I misunderstood.

     

    I don't see any reason why you should have a SF license when you are not using VXVM & VXFS, VCS license is enough since you are only using VCS.

    Hi

     

    Actually the Sybase data is in these Disk resourses (/dev/dsk/c1t0d....) so I see no way to use VCS 5.0 without VxVM since VCS 5.0 cannot monitor Disk resources.
