BESR 2010 + VM Ware

Can you expand on this please? Are you talking about protecting an ESX environment?

If yes, you will need to install BESR on each virtual machine and back them up the same way that you would back up any other server.

I have an ESX environment and has about 10 virtual machines running. I would like to backup the ESX environment and the Virtual machines using besr 2010 so that i can restore on the ESX environment in the DR site.

 The BESR virtual edition is more of a marketing fit, by offering blanket unlimited guest licenses per physical host.  It's much more cost effective for customers this way vs ala carte BESR-s licenses.  You are still installing BESR to each virtual guest, just not being charged for it, or as much as it could be charged for.

You cant install besr linux on the console as far as I know.  In fact, you should NEVER install anything to the console.

Thanks for letting me know about Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Virtual Edition. Is it possible with BESR 2010 to convert a physical machine to VM image and vice versa? FYI, i am using ESX 4.0.

Yes, you can convert in both directions.

P2P -> Take a system backup on the physical server or within a virtual machine. Restore the backup after booting to the BESR SRD. You can also boot your virtual machine to the BESR SRD and restore the backup there as well.

P2V -> Using the BESR console convert the backup to either VHD or VMDK, you can also convert to virtual within your virtual machine where BESR is as well installed.

V2P -> Boot the physical server to the SRD and restore the virtual disk by browsing for recovery points file name and selecting VHD or VMDK files within the BESR recovery wizard. You can also boot your virtual machine to the BESR SRD and perform a V2P there as well.

*P2P and V2P will require Restore Anyware.
*Create a virtual disk before booting the virtual machine to the BESR SRD if restoring within a virtual machine, doing this allows you a disk to restore to.

I am bit confused with the installation part. I want install both BESR 2010 and BESR 2010 MS on the same server (W2K3 R2). For installing BESR 2010 MS do i need to install BESR 2010 first and then BESR 2010 MS? or can i install BESR 2010 MS directly with out installing BESR 2010? Also how do i install lights out recovery from BESR 2010? what is the role o notification server in BESR 2010 MS (as this is missing when i install BESR 2010) and how to configure it. Will there be nay impact if i ingore notification server configuration in BESR 2010 MS?
