BESR 7.0 Restore Hangs on Reboot

Hello SR folks,

After an uneventful install/upgrade of BESR 6.5/7.0 (all in May, 2007) and creating/recreating recovery points for an old server (all RPs were verified after creation) we attempted to restore to a new server. The multiple drive restores went fine, though if you're expecting all to be up and running in an hour you'll need to revise those estimates.

After rebooting for the final time the boot sequence hung up at the Windows 2003 splash screen and would not proceed past it. Multiple attempts were made with the same result. Does this indicate a corrupt C drive recovery point?

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • My first instinct is to suggest you contact technical support.

If you'd like to have a parallel discussion here however I'm happy to participate.

Can you give us any more details about the original server, how many volumes are being moved to the new server, etc?  What is the general hardware configuration of the new server?

Are you using restore anyware?  Did any errors occur during the image restore process?  Were you prompted for any drivers or other Windows files during the restore?

Does the hang occur during the "normal" Windows splash screen, or during the mini-setup that we invoke as a part of restore anyware (plug-n-play)?

    Thanks.
  • Thanks Bill, you're one of the more dedicated moderators with Symantec.

That was my first thought, too, so, yes, I do have a case open. I figured it wouldn't hurt to tap other resources, also.

Original Server: IBM xSeries 255 2 GHz Xeon 12 GB RAM Raid 5
     C  8 GB
     E  78 GB
     F  78 GB
     G  109 GB
H  466 GB (SAN)    not being moved

New Server:  Dell PowerEdge 2900 Dual Quad Core 1.6 GHz  12 GB RAM
     1 TB Storage Raid 5

We made a Custom Recovery Disk, adding the drivers from the Dell setup disk. After the initial failed attempt at Restore Anywhere, Tech Support suggested trying Restore Anywhere again but enable Delete Drivers and Prompt for Drivers by pressing Ctrl/Shift before checking the Restore Anywhere checkbox, and the additional checkboxes will appear. Nice to know.

This time we were prompted for all the drivers in turn, and when done, started a reboot. This, too, failed, and resulted in a cycle of never ending reboots. Tech Support then suggested starting in Safe Mode and select Disable Automatic Reboot on Error but after selecting Safe Mode the reboot hung for a good 4-5 minutes before starting the normal reboot cycle again.

That's where we are now, awaiting his next reply.

  • I'm also checking for specific drivers from the Dell site that may be better suited to our server than generic installation CD drivers.
