BESR inquiry

Is besr can support Buffalo (NAS ) as backup storage? I havent found buffalo on hardware compatibility list. Please advise

Thanks,
  • We have 3 - 4 tb Buffalo NAS Terastation Rack mount storage boxes onsight here. I am backing up 50 XP nodes using BESRM 8.0
The buffalo uses a XFS file system ported to Linux Kernel
XFS is  proficient at handling large files and smooth data transfers.( wiki)

These boxes are reasonably priced and have served us very well. They are great for storing data and backups. Not good for streaming video or music but work well for storing our backups. There is a web GUI for setting it up and for backing it up. We use raid 5. It is capable of Raid 0,1,5,10 . I have found no issue using these devices.

  • BESR does not have a HCL (Hardware Compatibility List). It should work as long as the device is configured with a supported file system.

    Hope that helps.
  • Sorry what I check is for bews compatibility.
My question sir is bufalo has an linux os can besr still have  an option to store data to bufalo?besr can suport windows only right?
    Thanks so much
  • BESR does support some Linux file systems. See the following TechNote for more information:

  • gilbert08 -- I have no experience with the Buffalo NAS, so my opinion is based upon a loose collection of experiences.  Storing BESR images seems to work best if the file system on the storage device is NTFS.  However, it still could be possible to effectively store the images on a linux based files system.

Assuming any of the following scenarios:
    • Already have a Buffalo NAS but considering purchasing BESR
    • Already have BESR but considering purchasing Buffalo NAS
    • Considering purchasing both products.
I would build a Linux box in a lab setup (with SAMBA enabled)  using the same fike system that was on the Buffalo NAS.  If a Buffalo NAS already exists, then skip the previous step.  Then use either the trial or licensed version of BESR to test writing images and restoring them.  I know this isn't the quick and authoritive answer, but it would save you from making an expensive purchse based on hope and assumption.

  • Bakinup -- Thanks for the authoritave response.  I wonder what sector size the Buffalo is using?  I know when I built my home DVR, iI had to set the sector size to 64 KB in order to get good streaming audio and video performance.  However, that is probably not applicable for drive image storage.
  • Thanks for all your response. I'll will be do some testing first for this setup. I trus Mr. bakinup the words of mr. bakinup. Thanks for the link sir Riley.

    Thanks a lot
  • I was wondering if you tried the Buffalo box
I have been away for awhile
