Change server to unmanaged

Is there a way to change a server or backup job from managed to unmanaged without using the management console?  The guys before me here decided that it would be a good idea to install the management console in demo mode and let it ride.  Well, they are long gone and the demo is long ago expired so I can't get into the console to change the jobs in any way.

Is there any way to mark a job so I can manage it locally from the individual servers?  Would it help at all to uninstall the (demo) management console?

Ron

  • I have to rip the BESR software off of the 7 servers that are currently "managed" and then reinstall the software and then recreate the backup job.

I thought I was pretty clear that I can't get into the management console due to an expired demo license.  Any instruction that involves "log into the management console" is a non-starter.

    No, this is not possible.

You would need to disable the backup job from the management console and then force an update from the client-side. This should then remove the job from the client (you need to confirm this before going any further).

Once that is done, uninstall the management solution plug-in from the client (this step makes the client standalone again). You'll then need to create a local backup job.

  • Are you talking about BESRM (Backup Exec System Recovery Manager - for 8.x) or the Altiris-based management solution (for 2010/2011)?

  • Talking about BESRM for 8.x - not Altiris (former Altiris employee).

  • I had wrongly assumed that you were talking about BESR-MS/SSR-MS so apologies for that.

Having said that, this does not really change much. As BESRM 'controls' the backup, you can only cleanly remove the job from the management console I'm afraid.

  • If I go about removing and reinstalling BESR on the affected servers, I presume I will have to recreate the backup jobs there.  Not a big deal - however, is there any file or registry entries I need to "dump" to make sure the new install is no longer managed by BESRM?

For that matter, is there a file or registry entry I am change to just make the BESR install unmanaged and then I can go in and recreate the jobs?

    Correct.

You just need to uninstall the 'management control' piece.

As above, just remove the management control piece. The problem you have is that you need to remove the backup job first (which is normally done via the management server). A complete uninstall will probably achieve this but obviously this is not normal procedure..
