Edition of Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery

I'm confusing about the Symantec Backup Exec and the Backup Exec System Recovery (Virtual Edition and Server Edition).  My environment is:  2 same physical machines with VMware ESX 4.1 (host OS).  Each of them contains 2 VM running Windows 2008 (guest OS).

Other than the database which requires Backup Exec Agent for SQL Server, should I still use Backup Exec in each guest OS for backing up files?

Which edition (Virtual Edition or Server Edition) of Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) should I use for backing up Windows/VM images?  Where should I install the BESR, in host OS, in each guest OS, or separate physical server running Windows 2008?  (Note: VMware ESX is Linux based.)

Thanks in advance!

  • I'd go for BESR in the guest OS to backup the content of the VMs. Although there is a BESR Linux Edition (http://www.symantec.com/business/backup-exec-system-recovery-linux-edition), I don't know how tight the integration of VMWARE is with this product. The virutal Edition is only for Windows (http://www.symantec.com/business/products/sysreq.jsp?pcid=pcat_business_cont&pvid=besr_ve_1)

  • Yes, I find that the operating system requirement for BESR Linux Edition does not have VMware ESX, but only Red Hat, Suse.  But for the Virtual Edition, it seems that it can be installed in Windows host only.  Then how can it support VMware, Citrix, etc.?

To backup VM images, does it mean I have to buy BESR Server Edition and install it in each Windows guest OS, but not Linux guest OS?

    indecision

  • Does it mean BESR Virtual Edition is for Microsoft Hyper-V only?  Or it needs a separate Windows machine, so that it can manage those VMware/Citrix host?
