SSR 2011 and dual booting windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04

HI all,

Just seeking some clarification on whether there are any known issues of restoring a windows 7 64-bit image in a dual boot system.

I dual boot win7 ultimate and ubuntu 12.04 - they are both on separate physical hard disks but I currently load into the Ubuntu hard disk and run windows 7 as a default from the GRUB bootloader.

  • I am very keen to protect my windows 7 system and would like to know if I create an image of windows 7 in the above configuration will it lead to problems when I need to recover?
  • Would it be better if while creating the image in SSR 2011 I boot directly to the win7 hard disk, then reset my boot configuration to the above once the image is created?

Interested to know if anyone has any advice on this.

    Ubuntu itself has not gone through the full testing with SSR 2013, which means that it is not offically supported. 

    That said, it should be possible to install SSR 2013 in Windows 7 and create backups of both partitions, as long as that partition can be seen from within Windows and SSR. Thus, both partitions are backed up and the data is safe. The part in question is the GRUB bootloader, and you would almost need to test this in a test restore scenario to see if it would work with Ubuntu. Both partition should restore, but if the system fails to boot after the restore, it may require rebuilding the bootloader. Or you can reset the boot configuration accordingly in Windows, then change it back. This would ensure a proper Windows 7 boot, and then you could reset the bootloader after the restore.

    My question relates to SSR 2011. Would your above comments apply to that edition of the software?

    Also, how would I go about rebuilding the bootloader? Is that something that you can do within SSR?

    Finally, do you know if SSR 2011 allows you to create a bootable USB flash drive, or is it advisable to create a bootable CD-ROM instead?

    Yes, the same goes for SSR 2011, which is full compatible with Windows 7.

    There is SSR 2011 for Linux, which may restore the Linux partitions correctly (cannot restore NTFS), but again, Ubuntu is not supported, so if it fails to boot, I would recommend referring to the Ubuntu forums to fix boot problems if they happen.     Yes, you can create a bootable USB flash drive from within SSR. There is a wizard that will walk you through this. Whether you use the USB drive or a CD-ROM, it is up to you. Both will work, but the USB will boot considerably quicker than a CD.

    FYI - I successfully created a backup image using SSR 2011.

    I basically booted into the windows disk instead of the ubuntu disk created the recovery point and a boot USB - all worked well.

    Tested by booting from recovery USB into SSR 2011 recovery environment. Worked fine and I was able to see my backup image.

    Hopefully I won't have to use it!

    Again, if you do have to use it, you will be able to restore those partitions with the recovery disk. If you had to fix the boot process, as least all of your data will be there. Good luck!
