Symantec LiveState Recovery 6 Recurring Error -

I keep getting this constant error, at least once a day, on my server:

Date: 6/12/2008 9:05:16 AM
Notification Type: Error
Priority: High
Description: Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: HERMAN_BACKUP. Error E0BB0083: Unable to create incremental image. Error E0BB0184: There is not enough free space to maintain snapshot image on volume C:\.
Details: 0xE0BB0083

I've tried removing the backup configuration and starting over, I've tried changing the backup settings and nothing works. I have 51.8GB/127GB (76.1GB FREE) used on the C:\ drive, which does a baseline backup twice a week and an incremental backup 10 times a day (every hour). It saves up to 3 baseline backups on the backup drive, drive E:, which is currently using 93.5GB/232 GB (139GB FREE).

I only get this issue once or twice a day, and it won't run the incremental backup for that time slot, but then the next time it will. I need to get my boss off my back because he gets the email errors anytime it happens -- any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I've had no issues with this program up to now and I'm switching from 2000 server to 2003 server later in the year and will upgrade to the latest Symantec product then.
  • Though there may be enough space, it might not be contiguous. See if you are able to perform a boot time defrag of the drive’s MFT, used, and free space. Check the windows event logs to see if a VSS or symsnap error has occurred when you get this message; check the status of volume shadow copy service when this error occurs. Are there any other applications that may be using VSS during the day that might not properly release it when we attempt to snap the volume as well?

  • David,

I believe that was precisely the problem. I did finally fix the error about two weeks after I posted the original message -- all I did was copy the backups stored on my internal hard drive to temporary storage on an external hard drive, formatted the internal backup hard drive, then re-copied everything back over. I also deleted all of the backup information and started a new baseline backup with incrementals and everything returned to normal.

I thought it had something to do with the backup originally, but once I realized it was the drive itself, I didn't want to fix something with disk maint. just to have this same problem pop up again -- so formatting the entire drive did the trick. Thanks for the reply!
