Understanding SFHA and CommandCentral:Storage file names on FileConnect
What is FileConnect?FileConnect is the Symantec site from which business customers download product binaries. Its url is http://fileconnect.symantec.com
Logging in to FileConnect requires a serial number; that serial number is not the product license key. The serial number is provided to customers after purchase. Many, but not all, Symantec products for business customers are also posted on Symantec’s Trialware site. This site requires a SymAccount login rather than a Serial Number. Trialware’s url is http://www.symantec.com/business/products/licensing/trialware.jsp
What is being done?
The Symantec product group for SFHA and CommandCentral:Storage is rolling out standardized file names for files posted on / downloaded from FileConnect. This aims to improve usability and to create a more uniform and predictable experience.
To what versions do these rules apply?
For products in the Storage Foundation & VCS families, these names apply from 5.0 on UNIX and 5.1 on Windows. For CommandCentral:Storage, these names apply from 5.1.
What is the new naming scheme?
Standard SAMG file names have the following format:
<p><v>[r]<pl>[pv][hw][l][t]<ext>[si]
<p> = product name.
<v> = version. See Appendix 1 standard versioning.
[r] = release type. Optional; if omitted, product is the base GA release. Examples: MPx, SPx, or RUx
<pl> = platform. XPLAT is an abbreviation for cross-platform.
[pv] = platform version. Optional; used for HP-UX and sometimes for Linux distributions.
[hw] = hardware. Optional; examples: PA-RISC, IA, SPARC, x64, ppc64 (IBM P-series)
[l] = language. Optional; if omitted, indicates International English(I18N). Appendix 2 has other values.
[t] = file type. Optional: README (for a Readme file) or DOC (for product documentation).
<ext> = extension. Examples: .zip, .tar.gz, …
[si] = split indicator. Files over 2GB in size are split into fragments smaller than 2GB to accommodate limitations in the Internet Explorer browser. Currently the first fragment get aa, the second ab, and so on. If split files are required in the future, the first fragment will get 1ofn, the second 2ofn, etc., where n is the total number of fragments. Optional; if omitted, the file is not split.
<>= mandatory [] = optional
Underscore characters(_) separate fields and replace space characters (“ “). A file name should have no space characters.
As part of the same initiative, some files were removed from FileConnect since they are available elsewhere, and since in many cases these ancillary files were making it difficult for users to find the primary file on the page. The removed files, and their current locations, are given below.

All files posted after July 1, 2009 aim to comply with the new file name standard. As of November, 2009, Symantec had re-posting SFHA 5.0 (UNIX) and SFHA 5.1 (Windwos) files on FileConnect using the new naming standard. The binary file is identical to the original posting unless noted below; only the file name changes. For tracking purposes, both the original and the new names are listed below. Due to system limitations, the posting date displayed in FileConnect is the re-post date, not the date the original file was posted. In a number of cases a single file had originally been split, requiring the user to concatenate the files post-download in order to recreate the single, original file. Such files can be identified as they end in aa, ab, …, a_. Some of those split files have now been unsplit so that they are either a single, original file or they split into fewer files. In all cases, however, the binary (i.e., the .tar.gz file reconstituted via concat) is exactly identical to what was previously posted.
