Howto take Online Hot Catalog Backup

Today we discuss how Veritas Netbackup do take Backup of Online Hot Catalog via very easy snapShot procedure. In our case we have a environment of windows2003 server with Veritas Netbackup 6.5.
why i am writing this article ?
Basically i personally face some un usual error while taking the backup of Online Hot Catalog

Note:- in this article i dont really like to discuss how to create the backup policy for Online Hot Catalog but i try to influence on different aspects which verify that all necessary things are present to take the backup of Online Hot Catalog.

Error which i faced while taking the Online Hot Catalog backup of Veritas Netbackup

Every thing was correct in the policy which i had made in the Veritas Netbackup Server to take the Online Hot Catalog backup but unfortunately i had found two major errors while taking the backup of Online Hot Catalog So i also would like to show you the below errors and later in this article i also let all people know what were the majors which i had taken to made my Online Hot Catalog backup successful

1.) Catalog error 35

8/27/2009 8:54:58 AM - begin Catalog Backup

8/27/2009 8:54:59 AM - Error bpbackupdb(pid=4248) cannot make directory E:\Catalog for bpbackupdb, No such file or directory  

8/27/2009 8:54:59 AM - end Catalog Backup; elapsed time: 00:00:01

cannot make required directory(35)

8/27/2009 8:54:59 AM - Error bpbackupdb(pid=4248) Offline catalog backup to path E:\Catalog FAILED  

2.) Catalog error 227

9/3/2009 10:56:54 AM - requesting resource netbkup.NBU_CATALOG.MAXJOBS
9/3/2009 10:56:54 AM - granted resource netbkup.NBU_CATALOG.MAXJOBS
no entity was found(227)

Verify that you have configured Online Hot Catalog backup or not

The below snap shot is showing that the Online Catalog backup is not configured even you created policy in Veritas Netbackup Server from Netbackup Admin Console->Policies



The below snap shot shows that the Online Hot Catalog backup is configured in Veritas Netbackup Server


 

Verify that Veritas Netbackup database files are properly targeted for backup

After click on "Configure offline Netbackup Catalog Backup" you will find the below window which shows the Veritas Netbackup Server database which gets backup when you take the backup of Catalog

One more thing you keep in mind that when you have configured the Backup of Online Hot Catalog the below check "Only when manually initiated" must be highlighted

Howto take Online Hot Catalog Backup

After selecting the "Configure the Catalog Backup" above, do the below nine steps to create the Online Hot Catalog backup policy

 

• After completing the creation of Online Hot Catalog backup you must specify the storage location (either DSU or Tape) where you want to take the backup of Online Hot Catalog Backup

Best way to take the Differential Backup of Catalog

This is the best way to take the Differential backups of Catalog. The best thing in this differential backup is that , it takes a differential backup after every/each policy will trigger. So the best thing in this is that the Catalog will have all the information.
The normal Differential Backups trigger on the assign time, So the draw backup in this Differential Backup is it will not have the information in Catalog which policies will trigger after the Differential Backup.
