Migrating email software such as Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino can be a major headache—especially if you're going from one brand to the other. It can be complex, time consuming and usually must be done at night or over the weekend to ensure user access to email during business hours.

Using Symantec Enterprise Vault to automate the archival of emails and attachments based on policies (for example, by age or size), can reduce the complexity of email migrations in the following ways:

  1. Shortens migration time. Running two email platforms or versions at once—the traditional approach to migration sometimes referred to as "co-existence"—doubles required resources and project complexity. Keeping the duration of email migrations to a minimum is therefore important. By regularly archiving messages with Enterprise Vault, you can greatly reduce the amount of data that needs to be moved for each end user, and also move mailboxes much more quickly.

  2. Increases accuracy and efficiency. The more data you move, the greater the chances that some of it will be corrupt. Moving less data increases the chance of a successful migration. Another benefit of archiving is to provide end users with a virtually unlimited mailbox, eliminating the need for users to create personal archives or having to delete their emails to stay within a restrictive mailbox quota. Yet they still have instant access to old, archived messages due to a universal shortcut link that Enterprise Vault leaves in place.

  3. Eases transition to new software. Companies transitioning from Domino to Exchange can benefit from a feature of Enterprise Vault that converts Domino shortcuts to Exchange shortcuts, allowing for a seamless migration between the two email platforms.

Many companies planning email migrations choose to first install Symantec Enterprise Vault to reduce their total email storage by as much as 60 percent. Regardless of the size of your Exchange or Domino environment, Enterprise Vault will pay for itself in efficiency, labor savings, and risk mitigation.
