The SRD is a collection of advanced diagnostic and recovery tools for Windows computers in one application. Putting the SRD on a USB flash drive gives you a convenient way to easily access these powerful tools whenever and wherever you need them. For example, with a USB copy of the SRD, you can diagnose and repair corrupted hard drives; view and edit hard drive partitions; and recover a computer from “bare metal.” (See the Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5 manual for a full explanation of the SRD features.)

You’ll need the following to install the SRD on a USB drive:
• A USB flash drive with 8 GB or more of storage space.*
• A copy of the SRD is available online. Click here.
• A Windows computer with a media drive and an available USB port.

If you choose to download the SRD, you must first create a custom SRD CD. See Creating a Custom Symantec Recovery Disk CD in the Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery User’s Guide.

*Note: not all USB flash drives will be compatible. Please test the SRD application after installation.

Installing the SRD onto a USB flash drive
The following process assumes that the SRD files are placed on a bootable CD. However, this process can also be run from a computer with Microsoft Vista installed or another copy of Windows Vista PE. Installing the SRD on the USB drive erases all files that are stored on the USB drive. Therefore, be sure you first save any files on the flash drive to another location so that they are not permanently deleted.

To create a partition on the USB drive:
  1. Attach the USB drive to an available USB port on the computer.
  2. Insert the SRD CD into the media drive of the computer.
  3. Start (or restart) the computer to go into the SRD.

You may need to configure the computer to start first from the SRD CD. See Configuring your computer to boot from a CD in the Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery User’s Guide or in the Backup Exec System Recovery Help system.
  4. Click Analyze on the left side of the SRD panel.
  5. On the Analyze panel, click Open Command Shell Window.

  6. In the command shell window, type diskpart and then press Enter.
  7. Type list disk and then press Enter.
You should see an entry for each hard disk that is installed on the computer. You should also see an entry for the attached USB drive. Write down the disk number (for example, Disk 2) that represents the USB drive.
  8. Type select disk <n> (where <n> is the disk number you wrote down) and then press Enter.
WARNING: Be sure you have identified the correct disk number of the USB drive. You are about to delete all files that are stored on the selected disk.
  9. Type clean and then press Enter.
  10. Type create partition primary and then press Enter.
  11. Type select partition 1 and then press Enter.
  12. Type active and then press Enter.
  13. Do one of the following:
    • Type format fs=fat32 quick and then press Enter.
    • Type format fs=ntfs quick and then press Enter.
  14. Type assign and then press Enter.
  15. Type exit and then press Enter.
If you know the assigned drive letters of the attached USB drive and the media drive, you can copy all files from the SRD CD to the Flash drive and skip the next task below. Otherwise, continue with the next task to copy files from the SRD CD to the USB drive:
  1. Type exit again and then press Enter to close the command shell window.
  2. Remove the SRD CD from the media drive of the computer.
  3. Restart the computer to go back into Windows.
  4. Insert the SRD CD into the media drive of the computer.
  5. Use Windows Explorer to view the contents of the SRD CD
  6. Press CTRL+A to select all the SRD files and folders on the CD.
  7. Copy the files and folder to the USB drive.

Testing the installation of the SRD on the USB drive
You can test your USB drive installation by changing the boot sequence on a test computer to boot from USB drive. If the SRD application comes up after the boot sequence has been modified to ‘boot from USB,’ the SRD installation is complete. At this point you can click Help in the upper-right corner of the SRD to learn more about the features in the SRD, or you can click Exit.
