Attempting to Restore a Message from my own Mailbox:

Job ended: Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 2:31:12 PM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0000388 - Cannot log on to EWS with the specified credentials. Review the resource credentials for the job, and then run the job again.
Final error category: Resource Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-904

System Login Account Credentials for both Backup and Restore have been Tested as Success and is an Active Directory account with Domain Admin rights.  LogOnAs on the BE Services has been changed from Domain\User format to user@domain.com.

The only article found here is from a user who said they resolved the issue by installing ExchangeMapiCDO ver.121, but then I'm reading BE 2012 doesn't use that.

Wade,

Im sure that you have already checked but please verify that the logon account has an active exchange mailbox. Verify this by sending a message to it and the replying to the message from it. Additionally please verify that the mailbox is unique by opening up a new message, typing the first four letter s of the logon account and pressing ctrl + K and confirming that it resolves. Also verify that the mailbox is not hidden from the G.A.L. All this being correct enable EWS logging in windows and try to run the restore job again so that we can pinpoint the EWS fail cause.

Verify that the service account has the appropriate rights.

Was the backup that your trying to restore from taken prior to an exchange upgrade? Please review the following doc.

Hi Donald,

No, we migrated from 2003 to 2010 about 5 months ago.  This was from a backup performed a couple of days before.

Also, have you installed all the latest updates and rebooted your server recently?

Yes, LiveUpdate says it's updated and the server was rebooted last Wednesday.  I ran a new test Restore again and it failed for the same reason.

Hi Wade,

Do you have the Exchange Management tools installed on the Backup Exec Server?

Review this document and verify that the requirements for backing up and restoring Exchange 2010 are in place.

Hi Imosla,

To back up Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010, you must install the Exchange Management Tools for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010 on the Backup Exec server. The management tools on the Backup Exec server must be the same version or later as the management tools that are on the Exchange Server 2007/2010.

You can install the management tools when you do a custom install of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010. If you install the management tools and Backup Exec together on a Backup Exec server, install the tools first. If you install Backup Exec before you install the management tools, you must restart the Backup Exec server when the tools installation is complete.

Yes, we have a single Exchange 2010 Standard Server on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 box with the Exchange Management tools (EMC/EMS) on the same server.  Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition was installed after Exchange and the tools.

Thanks, Donald!!

No, the login account did not have an Exchange Mailbox.  After creating the Mailbox, I was able to restore an old Message of mine from last night's backup.

I assumed since it was a Member Of the three Exchange groups (All Hosted Organizations, Domain Servers, Services), it would have had sufficient rights to access Mailbox items.  Has a Mailbox always been a requirement for Exchange?

Wade...

         Glad to hear it!!

As for your question you dont need to have an active mailbox to restore the entire exchange database. However to do a GRT restore you must have an active unique and unhidden mailbox. This has always been this way.

Glad we were able to help.
