2 drives. job is trying to overwrite tape from another drive.

we are using backup exec v12 with ibm library 3100 with two drives LTO5.

we have two jobs which are running at the same time on two drives (two tapes. both tapes attached to same media set). both jobs configured to append to media and not overwrite. overwrite period 2 weeks.

we are erasing tapes before job starts .

second job finishes earlier than first job and there are a lot of free space on second tape.

first job not fitting on first tape and backup exec wants overwritable tape. why it is wants blank or overwritable tape? why it does not want to append to second tape where a lot of free space?

also, is it possible to configure that big job to write on both tape same time?

thanks

BE prompts for an overwritable or blank media(2nd tape onwards) whenever the job spans over multiple

tapes and this is by design.

...and to explain a bit more, if your append period is set too long, it won't use the tape. So check that out.

That said, if you have those 2 jobs backing up to a different media set each, they won't be used.

I should wait when first job finishes and after start second job?

...no. Then having a dual drive library makes no sense. Just make sure you have enough tapes available to be appended too/overwritten.

The behaviour that you described is as expected.  BE requires an overwriteable tape when it writes to the second or subsequent tape.  It cannot append to a second tape.

No. You cannot configure the big job to write to both tapes at the same time.
