21hrs for 72gb backup?

Hi,

We recently implemented a BE 11d backup solution here(we previously had nothing)
and we have noticed that for our measly 72gb of data across 3 servers (largest share
backup up is 55gb) it is taking 21hrs to complete. The backup process is started at
the time scheduled for it but we have an average Job rate of 103 mb/min.

Specs are as follows:
BE 11d rev 6235 w/HF 16
running on Windows XP: P4 HT 2.66ghz and 2GB RAM
Adaptec SCSI 29160 (Ultra 160 SCSI)

Backing up to:
Overland Powerloader Robotic Library
Model: LTO-LXML1117RB
HP Ultrium 1-SCSI Tape drive
17 slots loaded with HP 200GB Cartridges

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hi Kevin,

There are a number of issues that can affect throughput, but we'll start with some of the most common.

Firstly, verify that device manager shows Symantrec as the driver provider for the tape drive. If rebooting the server is not a problem, sometimes running Tapeinst.exe to uninstall and reinstall our drivers can make a difference.

Second, try setting up individual jobs to back up each server separately. This may help isolate the issue to a throughput issue from a single server. Does a backup of data on the Backup Exec server itself show the same degradation in speed?

The driver is provided by Symantec

Details:
HP Ultrium 1-SCSI Sequential Device
Driver Provider: Symantec Corporation
Driver Date: 9/5/2006
Driver Version: 5.1
Driver Signer: Not digitally signed

As for setting up seperate jobs for each server I will give that a try this weekend.
And the backup on the BE server itself runs at a slightly lower speed of 99.0 mb/min
