ADAMM mover error and low compression ratio, related?

Hi,

About 3 weeks ago we had a malfunction in our IBM TS3200 tape library (a small plastic piece broke inside and the robot was stuck). In order to fix this the technician opened the entire library case and removed the obstacle.

Soon after that I noticed that Drive 1 (out of four installed) is not compressing as always - it dropped from 3:1 on the daily backups to 1.6:1 (same data).

I also noticed a sequence of 4 events in the eventlog that occure twice a day at the same time:

The send time it happens is around 23:30

I checked again and again and there are no backups that start or end at these times (there are backups in action during that time).

We're using the Symantec drivers version 5.1.37.0 from 12.02.2008 for the tapes.

All jobs are defined with hardware compression.

I've tried replacing the fabric cable, restart the library and restart the BE server but same results.

Tonight I'll try to use software compression for this tape and see if there's any change.

 

I don't know if the two problems are related but it all started after the library was taken apart.

Any ideas?

Can you please have the Backup Exec services restarted and then attach the ADAMM log in here?

The location of the ADAMM log would be C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs

I am not sure if this is something to do with Backup Exec. We can confirm by having a look at the ADAMM log.

Few updates:

1. Switched last night to software compression for the jobs that go to Drive1 (2 jobs). on the tape itself I see a ratio of 1:1 (very bad ofcourse) and I see the Used Capacity column is higher than yesterday. However, on the job log of one of the backups I see good compression ratio on the backup sets themselfs. So I'm totaly confused now.

2. The errors in the eventlog appeared tonight on several other times with no correlation to specific backups start\end. It's like they occure during the backup process.

Why is it that BE doesn't always show the compression ratio of the backupset itself (not the entire tape) even if I use software compression?

Errors such as

generally indicate a hardware problem or a communication issue.  Probably not related to opening/repairing the library or the reduced compression, but stranger things have happened.

I hadn't seen the port driver "fnicwl64" before.  Is this a physical or a virtual server?  What HBA is using that driver?  Is it FCoE, FC or SAS?  If the HBA that you are using isn't on the HCL, then you wouldn't have full official support, but if this configuration worked previously, then it should continue to work.  But then, I see the communication error above and get concerned...

The server is a Cisco UCS Blade. Both the UCS and the tape drives connect to a Cisco MDS FiberSwitch using FC ports. Everything worked well since installation a few years ago. It all started miraculously after that physical problem we had. I now recall that during the repairing of the library, the technician also disassembled one of the tape drives and messed with it a bit before putting it back. though I don't think it was Tape1 from the error messages.
