AOFO: Initialization failure. Snapshot provider error (0xE0008516)

Hi all,

Using BackupExec 10.0 rev 5520 on Windows Server 2003 SP1 and am getting the following error message:

AOFO: Initialization failure on: "\\SERVER\SHARE". Advanced Open File Option used: VERITAS Volume Snapshot Provider (VSP).
Snapshot provider error (0xE0008516): Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.

The error is occuring when backing up a share over the network. The Remote Agent has been re-instaled and the servere rebooted and we are backing up an MS SQL share.

I have searched over the existing threads and come up with two answers:
* Redo the job, and/or;
* Reinstall AOFO.

We are not backing up Exchange as all the other posts relate back to a fix for Exchange. Again, we are backing up an MS SQL share over the network and there are also no other errors in the logs.

Has anyone had any luck with re-making the job or reisntalling AOFO? Is there a fix for this that I have missed?

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards,
James

Hello,

What data are you backing up? Are you backing up any databases like Exchange , SQL or Lotus Domino using AOFO?

If so then it is recommended not to use AOFO with this backup.

Also try firing a backup job to a backup-to-disk folder for test purposes.

Thankyou for the reply.

We are backingup the backups of the MSSQL database files, not the active and in use databases. As SQL doesn't have these file in use will AOFO still cause issues here?

I will configure a backup to disk and will adivse of the results

Hi TNS!

In this case i would suggest you to refer following technote which explains the intended use of AOFO.

http://support.veritas.com/docs/263784

Also visit http://support.veritas.com/docs/263138

which explains more on why AOFO will not backup SQL database files.

Thanks and regards,
