AWS S3 Glacier or Tape Gateway

Hi,

Is there any advantages of using S3 Glacier or the Tape gateway?  If the media retention period is expired, would S3 Glacier or the Tape gateway automatically deleted the files in S3 Glacier storage or recycled the virtual tapes from the VTL?

Hello,

Advantages of using S3 Glacier & Tape Gateway is as follows -

"S3 Glacier" storage class is designed to provide you a lowest cost archive storage in the cloud along with retrieval flexibility.   Here you can learn more about AWS S3 Glacier Storage Class.

"Tape Gateway" enables a Tape like infrastructure experience in the application without changing existing backup workflows. Here, you can learn more about AWS Tape Gateway VTL.

Regarding backup sets deletion is concerned, yes, if media retention period is expired (and there is no dependent backup set exists on this expired backup set in the chain OR if this is NOT a last backup set), Backup Exec instructs AWS S3 services to delete the backup sets & reclaim the space from S3 Glacier Storage & AWS Storage Gateway VTL. This is part of Backup Exec's standard "data life cycle management polices" that it uses to reclaim storage space across the devices.
