About BE 2015 migration

Hi,

Currently run BE 2010 R3 and BE 2012 sp4 in 2 servers.

I am planning to migrate both to BE 2015.

  • For BE server migration, am I just direct install BE 2015 ? Anything need to prepare / do before ?
  • For agnet, am I just copy installation files of agent from server to client after migration then start migration ?

Thanks

Currently, both server / agent is running BE 2010 R3 sp3.

BE 2015 supportted to backup with BE 2010 R3 sp4 agent.

Since large number of server is running I can't migrate all within one day.

Thus I am planning to upgrade all agnet first (from BE 2010 R3 sp3 to sp4), but server keep R3 sp3.

Will 2010 R3 sp3 server support 2010 R3 sp4 agent ?

Thanks

Is either of your current Backup Exec server running a 32bit operating system as BE 15 will not install on 32bit (as a Backup Exec Server, the remoet agent will run on 32bit for backing up)

Also check the HCL and SCL carefully for older applications and hardware in your environment as you should understand what is and is not supported as part of your upgrade plans

No. BE 2010 R3 SP3 will not support SP4 agent. In any case, the media server needs to be on SP4 before it can be upgraded to BE 15. Upgrade your media server to SP4 and then push our the SP4 agent

Both BE server running 64-bit OS.

I have checked compatibility list.

Since many agents are 2010 R3 sp3 only but BE2015 compatible with 2010 R3 sp4, so I am woundering update agent to 2010 R3 sp4 or directly update to 2015 agent.

Any migration step could provide ??

For example, backup files / stop service required ?

Thanks

Check the TN below:

https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.HOWTO98878.html

I'd recommend stopping the BE services (incl. the SQL service running the BEDB) and make manual copies of the Data/Catalogs folders before proceeding with the upgrade. This allows you to rollback.

Thanks!

Hi,

After did all preparation,

  • do I just put installation disc to make installation ?
  • do i need to uninstall installed BE 2010 / 2012 ?

1. Yes

2. If you uninstall either BE 2010/2012 then all your jobs and other settings will be gone.  If you just run the BE 15 installation, then your jobs and other settings will be migrated to BE 15.

Thanks for answer.

But I have to update BE2010 R3 sp4 before migration.

  • Do I use this file for update server and agent ?

https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH208828.html

  • For agent update, I should update server to sp4 then deploy from server or just use sp4 file to update ?

Thanks

Can I do with this way ?

  • After upgrade server to R3 sp4, then copy agent installation files from BE server to remote server and start agent installation ?

Thanks

Yes, but why? Isn't pushing out the agent easier?
