DLO is now a completely separate product from BE.  I don't think you need a separate server for DLO, but you should check this on the DLO forum or connecting Symantec tech support.

Hi William,

DLO and Backup Exec is a separate product.

  • Yes, you need to install new Desktop and Laptop server

Below link is where you can find documentation about Desktop and Laptop Option

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=landing&key=61042

Regards,

Adonis

Hi William,

Yes you can install DLO Server on existing BE2012 Server.

CC: PKH,

As what I had stated "you need to install new Desktop and Laptop server". Since BE2012 and DLO is a separate product, William neded to install DLO Server.

From Symantec DLO 7.6 Admin Guide (page 13), DLO contains the following components:

  • DLO Administration Server
  • DLO Dedupe Server
  • DLO Administration Console
  • DLO Database
  • DLO Maintenance Server
  • DLO (Agent)

The first five components can be installed/reside on one server, while DLO Desktop Agent resides on the desktops and laptops that William wanted to protect.

It should have no problem coexisting with BE. However, you should post this question on the DLO forum where the people are more familiar with DLO

Hi,

Is Backup Exec and DLO use different management interface ?

Or DLO will combine with Backup Exec and control by BE ?

Thanks

As I said earlier, they are TOTALLY different products and they have NO relationship with each other.

Just read DLO AdminGuide and found there has a "DLO Depude server"

Is this server need to separate with Admin server ?

Thanks.

As I said, you should ask your DLO questions in the DLO forum below

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/backup-and-recovery/forums/desktop-laptop-option

They are the DLO experts.  This forum is for BE only.

Whilst you can install Backup Exec and DLO on the same sever, if the DLO will be protecting a large number of workstations and if Backup Exec will be using Deduplication then for performance reasons I suspect it might be an idea to use separate servers

If you do use the same server then DO NOT use the same disk storage/volume for both BE deduplication and DLO storage

Also as others have stated, the consoles are completely different and there is no interaction between them.

Likewise Deduplication in the two products is a completely different process and cannot be shared. (DLO deduplication is a file level basis that does not use the PDDE or OST technologies that BE and NBU use)
