Agent support for Microsoft SQL 2005?

Evan_Waite

Now that SQL 2005 is released, can someone update us on the planned release date for agent support on x86 and x64 versions of SQL 2005? This article (http://support.veritas.com/docs/276497) hasn't been updated since May 2005 so it isn't much help. NetBackup already claims support for SQL 2005 but so far nothing for BackupExec.

Thanks in advance

Can you give me an idea who I might contact at Symantec/Veritas for an answer to this? We need to know if support will be coming in a few days or a few months as it effects some purchasing decisions.

Thanks,

Evan

yes- this is radiculous, sql 2005 is released and still no word.

Yup Kyle, totally crazy that they haven't at least given some indication of when (lots of people are itching to deploy SQL 2005 but do care to backup their data). As I said in my original message, Netbackup 6.0 (also from Veritas) does support SQL 2005 so it's not like they aren't planning on ever supporting it. I did find an article of interest (http://www.itjungle.com/two/two061505-story03.html). Here is a quote:

"Other Veritas products will also be supporting SQL Server 2005, a Veritas spokeswoman confirmed. NetBackup 6.0, which is due to ship in October and is targeted at larger organizations, will support SQL Server 2005 when the new database becomes available this fall, she said. The current version of Backup Exec, a backup and recovery product that's popular among small and medium size Windows shops, will not support SQL Server 2005, but the next version will. Backup Exec version 10 started shipping about a year ago."

This article is from June 2005 so I assumed 10.1 (aka 10d) would be the so called "Next version" that WOULD include support for SQL 2005.

I only need to know when the support will be available so I can make an informed decision. I'm not demanding it should be available right now (although that wouldn't hurt).

Maybe this would get a little more attention if everyone interested in an answer to this question would post a simple "Me too" (which would pretty much pin this thread on page 1 judging by the current view count).

We are ready to move into production with SQL 2005, but Backup Exec 10 is holding this up. We don't want to invest in Netbackup, since we just purchased Backup Exec in May 2005.

Does 10d's agent not work at all with SQL 2005, or is it just 'not supported' as yet (ie. Veritas have yet to fully test out the compatibility and give it their official 'supported' certification)? Perhaps the current agent works enough to do normal DB backups but not some of the other newer SQL 2005 features?

But yup, we'd like any new SQL boxes we build to be running 2005, lack of Backup Exec support might put that idea on hold.

Hello All,
Please log an enhancement request for this feature to be included in the future releases of Backup Exec at:

Hey Steve,

The 10d agent doesn't work at all with SQL 2005. Only the drive shares, system state, etc show up in the selection list (but no SQL on any SQL 2005 boxes we have setup, SQL 2000 of course works fine).

Renuka,

I've entered an enhancement request a couple days ago using that website. I still find it hard to believe that this feature wasn't already planned though.

I to have entered a request two months ago and still no response from that. Why can't we get an answer to this question? Why is it such a secret?

I have to agree with you Joe, it's not like SQL 2005 hasn't had a huge public development cycle. And it isn't like Veritas doesn't have a business case for supporting MSSQL server (they support the older versions, and make I'm sure a decent amount off that agent).

Regardless, the no answer thing is what is bugging me. They had enough info back in May to post that article saying they didn't currently support it. Somebody at Veritas must have an idea when they will. All most of us are looking for is an expected release date so we can plan our deployment. If it's Q1 2006 or Q4 2006 it makes a difference on our timelines.

Sales tells me to talk to Tech support, Tech support tells me to talk to Sales. This is causing us to look at other vendors

Yay! They've released a hotfix to give us SQL 2005 support. Here is the URL info:

Why were we given the run around and not told this two days ago? Oh well, I am just happy to see it. We can now move our project into production.

Unless you're planning on using x64. The patch doesn't update the most current agent for x64 (which is 10.0.5520). They haven't released a new agent for 10d and x64 (that I'm aware of at least).

Nope we are not using x64 systems, so this patch will work for us!

Hello Everybody ,
Backup Exec (tm) for Windows Servers version 10d (10.1) does support Microsoft SQL 2005 (Yukon).

To enable this functionality, Hotfix 6 for 5629 will need to be applied to the media server and all remotely protected machines.

(Backup Exec for Windows Servers now supports Microsoft SQL 2005 (Yukon))

Hi Renuka,

Can you give us information on updating the x64 version of the remote agent. Hotfix 6 doesn't apply because it is meant for 10d but the newest released version of the x64 agent is only 10.0.5520. If you wish, I can start another thread.

Hello,
Backup Exec 10d remote agent supports x64 bit remote operating systems listed below.
http://support.veritas.com/docs/278254
You just need to install the hotfix and update all remote agents as per the procedure in this technote:
http://support.veritas.com/docs/280204.
If we have misunderstood your problem, request you to elaborate.
