Hi guys,
Having an issue with Backup Exec on one of our backup servers.
For daily backups I do a quick erase of x8 LTO3 tapes and instead of going into scratch media they ALL end up in cleaning media. I delete them from there do an inventory, and again a quick erase and still they end up in cleaning media.
If I do multiple Quick erases and inventories I do end up getting them in scratch media (then associate with media set) but when the scheduled job runs they are again moved into cleaning media
Backup Exec Version 13.0 Rev. 2896
Server Windows 2003 Std Ed.
MSL6000 Media Libary (LTO3)
I have powered down the Server and the Media Libary but this still has not resolved the issue.
If anyone has any ideas how resolve this issue please let me know.

See

Tapes are displayed as cleaning media in Backup Exec (All Versions)
This says it applies to older versions, but may be worth a look

...or all tapes show up as cleaning media after an inventory

Hi
when was the last time you have updated the firmware of the tape drive ??
Secondly also can you check if the drivers that are installed in device manager for the tape library are from symantec.
If not from symantec then run the tapeinst.exe or go to tools >> wizards >> tape device configuration wizard and install the symantec drivers. Reboot the server and check.
Also go to the media tab. Click on cleaning media and delete all the tapes which are present in the cleaning media. Run inventory on any one of the tape and see which media set that tape is getting assigned to.
If that does not work then delete the RL from backup exec, restart the services.

Thanks for the replies so far. The issue seems to be pointing to a faulty Tape drive.
Will update this call once I have a resolution.
