Append Media in Netbackup 6?

We have just purchased an Ultrium 960 drive with a 400/800GB capactiy. The Diff's are only 40Gb a night so I was hoping to use just one tape Monday-Fri for the Diff's then a seperate tape for Full? but still have the ability to recover Monday's data on a Thursday for example, rather than only overwriting the tape each night.

I've had a look in the manual and in version 5 but can't see anything....

Thanks

Graeme

Hello,

Are you using Backup exec for Windows servers? If yes, then refer to the following technotes in order to configure the append periods and the overwrite protection periods for the device:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/192265
http://support.veritas.com/docs/237374

In case you are not using backup exec for Windows servers, do reply with details on your configuration so that we will move this thread to the appropriate forum.

Graeme,
If this indeed a Netbackup question then here is the answer.
NetBackup never overwrites images on an active tape. It will always append to the end of the tape. Even if an image expires at the very beginning of the tape, Netbackup will not overwrite that part of the tape. NetBackup continues to append only to a tape until it is FULL. Then the tape will not be available for backups untill ALL images on the tape have expired. When that happens then the tape will be placed into the scratch pool and made available once again for backups.

Another important point is that by default, NetBackup does not allow multiple retentions to be placed unto a tape. It will not mix a retention of 1 week with a retention of 1 month. All 1 week retentions (daily backups) will be placed unto a single tape and all 1 month (weekly full) will be placed unto a single tape.

When a tape becomes full it is only available for restores until ALL images on the tape finally expire. Then it will be placed into the scratch pool for reuse.
