B2D job causing server to loose connection

Hi all

I am running BKEXE 12.5 (2213) and I am testing the VMware backup feature.
When running a backup job selecting a vmware server, and choosing a B2D folder on a NAS box as destination, I noticed that the vmware server looses connection to the network for about 20 sec during the backup process??

My setup includes a VCB-Proxy server and a VCB-HELPER.

Has anybody seen this before?

Best regards
Jens Nielsen

Hi

This problem I have is caused by VMware snapshots.
Every time a snapshot is taken or deleted the server goes offline for a while.
So..case closed.

Thanks all.

Regards Jens

Hi Jens,

Are you using NDMP to backup to the NAS box, and is the B2D folder configured correctly?
Are there any errors given either in BEWS or Event Viewer?

Laters!

You cant NDMP a VMware backup/VCB based backup.

That said, backup technologies, it doesnt matter who the vendor is, are a great way to find weakspots in your infrastructure from disk I/O, network bandwidth, switch backplanes, NIC's, etc...

Could you be exceeding something on your VMware server, switches, or even NAS?

What make model NAS?
Are you running trunked NIC's on your VMware server?
Have you looked at the performance stats of everything during that backup job?
How about save to a different location, local to the BE server perhaps just for testing?

Hello again

>CraigV..........I am not using NDMP

This connection loss comes no matter where I put my B2D files. It is not only on the NAS box I see this sympthom.
My VMware servers are running on a IBM NAS3600 Box, and it doesn't seem to be that busy during the backup job. Only the CPU performance seems a little high, but there is a new firmware on the way, that should reduce this. Maybe that will help.
There are no warnings or errors during the backup.
It seems that the connection is lost after the VCB-proxy server has finished copying the backup-data to a temp location (on the VCB Proxy server) and is just about to send the files to the B2D folder over the network.

Hi Jens,

Is it a specific error? If so, can you post it here?

Dear CraigV

Sorry for the late answer, but I had to test this issue after our firmware upgrade on our IBM N3600 NAS box.
Unfortunately that did not solve the problem. :(

As I wrote there are no errors during the backup-job. The source-server just looses network connection for about a minute during the backup job
