We are currently using Backup Exec 11D Ver. 11 Build 7170 and utilizing a Tape backup. This is costly to our company and I was wondering if the backup can be configured to an external harddrive instead of tapes. We are currently using a tape for each night for 2 weeks and then the tapes are reused. The tapes have reached their useful life and we are wanting a more cost efficient solution without purchasing a new backup exec program/license.

Hi,
No problems to do this. You'd define B2D drives on the external drives and run the backups to these.
however, versions of BE prior to BE 2010 weren't very good with rotating drives. I'd suggest reading pkh's good article on this for further information.

You can use the theory behind it to create your removable B2Ds on those external HDDs.
Thanks!

"You can use the theory behind it to create your removable B2Ds on those external HDDs."
External Hard Drives should be configured as standard B2D devices
R-B2D is for hardware where the chassis stays connected and the media is removeable. like Jazz or RDX drives
