Hi there Afrika,

If you have the Exchange agent installed, it's going to ignore your *.edb...no worries here. You'll be backing up the Information Store anyways, so you don't need file backups of the *.edb or Exchange logs. It takes care of that.
Also, don't use AOFO when backing up Exchange (or any DB)...Symantec don't recommend this.
For your VSS error, you need to update with the VSS update package as per the article below:

Have installed the VSS update package will be running the backup over the weekend and will update you by Monday(28-12-09).

Good day

Job still failing with the same VSS error after installing the update, found that the volume shado copy service was not started.
Have started the service and will see how it goes with today backup.
