We re-instated support for a client’s current Backup Exec 12.5 SBS license as this is what they had already owned and had previously been working. Now we are unable to upgrade to Backup Exec 2010 as it will not let us install this license on server 2008 standard. Is there a crossgrade option from BE SBS to BE 2010 R3?

Only difference between BE SBS and BE for standard server is the license.
You need to contact licensing team to negotiate for the BE for standard server license key

Do you mean that you cannot install the SBS license on 2008 STD? This is correct, as SBS version will only install on an SBS OS
I haven't done an upgrade like this recently, but used to be if an upgrade install could not find BackupExec on the server, it would ask you for the CD from a previous version. Does it not do this, now?

I don't recall a crossgrade from SBS to regular for customers. Symantec at their discretion could discount things, but for such a small deal, good luck with that...
Just install BE without a key. It'll run in trial mode for a short time, in the mean time make your purchase.
