BE 12.5 System State Fails to backup

rkw
Level 3
After reading through various threads and troubleshooting this on and off for the past few weeks, I'm looking for any suggestions anyone might have.

Server:  Dell Power Edge R710
OS:  Windows Server 2008 with SP1.  SP2 installed via updates.
Symantec BE 12.5.

This is a production server that handles certificates, file sharing, VPN and backup tasks, and not to mention, it is located three hours away.

Advanced Open File option:  I've tried with and without.
SP2 - reinstall.  On Windows Server 2008, this isn't an option.  It would require the uninstallation of SP2 and then reinstall it.  There is another system that handles our Exchange 2007 duties which is setup exactly the same:  R710 with Windows Server 2008 as a DC, and with the remote agent installed it does not behave the same way.  Only the local fails on system state.

I've read up about slipstreaming from the OEMs and even possibilities that the drive isn't set to active by the OEM disks.  But what is the answer or drive that needs to be refreshed from OEM if that is the fix?

Thanks in advance!

A solution came up, which doesn't require uninstalling SP2 and reinstalling SP1 which most have advised.

While the problem comes from a vss writers issue, there's nothing in vssadmin which shows an issue.  The problem seems to come from DFS.

Issuing pre:  net stop dfs & net stop dfsr
Issuing post: net start dfs & net start dfsr

Everything seems to clear up.

Workign with Symantec support on this issue with no resolution yet.  Issue stems with the vss writers.  Patch was issued by MS for 2003, but nothing for 2008 at this time.

Unable to reinstall SP1 or even SP2 for that matter.  No /force switch available.

Anyone else running into similar issues?

I advised you conact symantec technical support and let someone fix this for you. Just make sure that you have valid support for your product upon calling in.

Ready your Serial numbers or customer, order numbers and/or support identifier Number(Support Id)

Call them @ http://www.symantec.com/feedback/contactus.jsp

As my last post stated - I'm working with support on this issue with no resolution - yet.  Just thought I'd keep this thread updated in case someone posts up a real resolution.

Also, you state that you advised me to contact support.  Not sure where this advise was posted.

Solution marked.

Created a pre.bat with: net stop dfs & net stop dfsr
Created a post.bat with: net start dfs & net start dfsr

Added each into their respective areas in the task.  All is working fine.
