What to do to 'clear' the drive.

Have rebooted. Tried to clean (fails). INventoried all tapes, no effect...

You can run an inventory job that uses a drive that the BE GUI shows as occupied by a different media?  If so, it sounds like somethings is stuck in the database.  You may need to disable and delete the robot and drive, restart BE services to have the hardware re-detected.

1. Inventories do not finish- unless I do them from the tapes one at a time
2. Have deleted the drive (after disabling) and restarted BE services. It shows a tape in the drive still after this, but: the tape now has no label no information at all. No media label, no description...
3. Have also rebooted the library. And the server connected to it.

What do you mean?  Can you give more details?  If an inventory works, then that should confirm that BE knows the drive is empty an usable.  After the inventory, I assume BE would update its database to show the drive as empty.

May try repairing the database from beutility?
