I dont think so BE supports any free version of ESX

EDIT: All free versions of ESXi (3.5i and 4 i) require a minimum license from

VMware in order to be protected by Backup Exec

BE2010 R2 SCL  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH137682

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH137682 (Page # 10)

As per the SCL for ESXi 4.1 is compatiable with BE2010R2

No.  The free version of ESXi does come with the vStorage API which BE 2010 R2 uses to backup VMWare VM's.  The requirement for the vStorage API is stated in the first note on page 9 of the SCL.  You need to use a paid version of ESXi.

Of course, you can still use traditional agents to backup your guests that are virtualized.  You can even take advantage of the cheaper licensing of the VMware agent ( if it makes sense where you have more than 4 guests)

You can then use client side deduplication to reduce the backup job to the bare minimum.  It's not snapshot based backup, but client-side dedupe will be pretty low impact when it works...
